New dolly, and other wants
I’m sure some of you may have already seen pictures of my new doll on my Flickr account, but I’ve also been wanting to talk about her here… The cute little doll in the picture to the left is a vintage Strawberry Shortcake doll from 1979, she’s the very first edition with flat hands. I had been wanting a Strawberry Shortcake for a long time, but I put off buying one because I was being picky and wanted one mint in the box. Then I realized a box was unnecessary because I would be taking her out of the box to take pictures anyway. I got her off eBay for around $20, which is a pretty good deal considering she’s basically mint. Even her hat was still factory attached to her head, and might I had it was a real pain in the arse to remove that plastic!
She’s probably one of the more cuter dolls I own, but I think the reason I like her so much is because she brings back childhood memories… I remember my sister and I had a little Strawberry Shortcake stove and I played with it all the time. It was green and had little strawberry knobs…at least I think it was green… It’s hard to remember but the point is I loved that stove!
My sis and I also had a record player, and besides jamming out to my favorite childhood song “Mack The Knife” I listened to a lot of those read-along story book records and had a few Strawberry Shortcake ones. So, I had a little Strawberry Shortcake in my childhood, and anything that reminds me of those precious times makes me happy. I would also like to get a few other vintage dolls from the SSC collection including Orange Blossom and Lemon Meringue.
Seriously, I have soo many dolls on my wish list right now. Most of them are vintage - there’s just something about owning a vintage doll - I guess just knowing it’s older than I am, and the rareness.
I actually only own five dolls in total right now, I want to keep expanding my collection it’s just that some dolls are so expensive! Plus, I need a cabinet or something to keep them clean and display them nicely.
Even though I don’t have the cash flow to buy them right now, here are some dolls I wish for and will hopefully get someday:
1967 Mattel Casey

Casey is one of Barbie’s friends. I love the rooted eyelashes and her bobbed blond hair - she’s gorgeous. Although, if I don’t ever get a Casey I’ll settle for a Francie or a Twiggy. They’re all wonderful.
1972 Susie Sad Eyes

I just love their eyes! Some people find them to be a bit creepy and goth-like, but I love them.
1969 Fashion Flatsy

Flatsy is such a weird doll - she’s flat like a pancake. I think Flatsy is odd and goofy and want one just for that reason.
I could go on and on with my doll wish list, but I don’t have the time and I’m sure no one cares. I will admit that sometimes I’m embarrassed of my doll fascination. I had someone say something to me the other day and I quote: “It’s funny, you’re a grown ass women, and you like dolls.” It really offended me, and I don’t know why because usually I don’t care what people think. I guess I just don’t want anyone to think I’m a weirdo. Then again I think about all the other millions of adults that collect dolls; people with kids even, and some of them have shelfs and shelfs of dolls… So, I guess I’m not that odd?

I’ve never heard of the Flatsy dolls. They look really cool! The Sad Eyes are probably my favorite because I always have a soft spot for something with big eyes. The dolls are awesome, and SSC is adorable.
Whoever said you’re too old for dolls is an idiot. You shouldn’t be embarassed. I have a Tamagotchi obsession and I still take one out every now and again and take shit for it. Enjoy your dolls!

you know what ive never seen those dolls or heard of them ever, they’re pretty awesome. it’s crazy, i’ve never read anyone’s blog who was a doll collector, those dolls are cute and not creepy.

I have an ol’ rainbow brite doll! I found her at an antique store. I wonder how much she’s worth? LOL! I wish I could find a JEM & The Holograms doll or a She-Ra doll… I’d totally buy them.
I’m 30 and I still drool over dolls in the toy dept section at the store. haha

Maybe i should post some pictures of my dolls, I am sad that I haven’t taken better care of them. I stopped really taking care of them when i thought it was “Uncool” to have dolls. Also the guys i where dating at the time didn’t think it was that cool, so i boxed them up
i have some cute ones too.

Congrats on getting the new doll for such a good price!
I like the 1972 ones

My mom and I were looking at dolls in the thrift store (mostly old baby dolls and porcelain dolls) and talking about people who collect. I mentioned you, and how I want to sew them clothes. I think most girls still have a fascination with dolls. Think about all of the moms buying their daughters dolls before their child is old enough to even understand what it is. I think you’re rad for it and you make me want to start a collection. Like I said, I like the fashion aspect. I’d love Twiggy, although I also dig those Sad Eye dolls. Old school Barbies are so interesting too - I love that they are characters and not just “Barbie with short hair”, “Barbie with brown hair”, etc.
Great post!

Oh yeah and I’m with Whitney, I stopped dolls and got into boys. Donny is OK when I talk about dolls and stuff and look at them in stores. He likes art and loves the vinyls I’m getting so he sorta understands. Previous boyfriends thought liking dolls made a girl psycho though. My poor Addy doll (American Girl lol) is all scratched up at my parents’ house somewhere.

I love Strawberry Shortcake. I had one of the dolls when I was a kid. I wish I still had it.

Hm, I was never into SSC as a kid. Now it’s coming back in, and my 6y/o niece is into her. The only dolls I collect are the I Love Lucy dolls, and that’s just because I’ve been Lucy obsessed since I was an extremely young child. They dolls are not vintage [yet], but they will be when I’m older. But I do have a rare set that was never sold in stores, of Lucy and Desi together
Glad to know I’m not the only 20-something year old collecting dolls! I don’t take mine out of the package though. I never even open the boxes. I just look at them and display them.

The Strawberry Shortcake doll is indeed adorable. I love her. I also love the eyes of the Susie Sad Eyes doll. They’re quite cute, you just can’t help but love them. The Flatsy doll is a bit odd, isn’t it? I love dolls as well. I collected them as a kid but as I grew older I guess they were never of much interest to me then. It’s a really neat collection though. =)

There is nothing embarassing about collecting dolls as an adult. Well, so long as you don’t end up as the “crazy doll lady” who is trying to win the “she with the most dolls…WINS” contest in her head.
I also collect and customize dolls, am in my 30s and not embarassed about my hobbies. There are times when I’m reluctant to admit that I’ve spent $700 on a doll to someone that knows nothing about the hobby or understand it because it either takes too long to explain to them or they are just too close-minded to understand. But overall, it’s what makes me happy and that’s what matters.
BTW, I collect bjds (ball-jointed dolls), CY Girls, Blythe (I currently have only one), Takara Jenny and customized Volks 1/6 dolls.

I was huge into dolls back in the day and like Whitney said, I think I stopped collecting them when I starting noticing boys (but not because I thought it was uncool, more like my interest changed? he he). I still have a few (my favorite is the Rose doll from Titanic). I think it is great you’re still into collecting them! We all need something different about us

I srsly want to get into collecting dolls, but it’s such an expensive habit. I want Blythes and Pullips! And Susie Sad Eyes! And the Flatsies! And those 1960-ish dolls you posted before, Dynamite Dolls? Gah!
I heard the new Strawberry Shortcake character looks like a slut, but I have yet to see.

Aww no you’re not strange at all. People collect a lot more stranger (is that word?) stuff lol. But you know I think that is really cool that you collect vintage dolls, it’s like… history, little girls from the time of the war played with them, and such you know? It’s neat. And I would of liked you to show some more of what you wanted to collect. They are very interesting looking. I must admit though the sad eyes dolls are indeed a little scary.. but the Casey doll is quite cute, I like the eyes on her as well. =) I hope you do get through to collecting all the wonderful dolls you have in mind.
Take care xoxx

Wow, this definitely brings back childhood memories! A few years back when Carebears started being remade and such, I started collecting them which prompted me to look for the old school ones on ebay along with items like the ones you got above. Fun times

I do hope you can get the dolls you are wanting

Everyone has a collection of something.. I think you have a great collection of dolls. As they are worth a lot of $$. Plus it’s something you enjoy later on in life.
I had almost everything strawberry shortcake when I was little. I think I still only own my old twin bedsheets and her as a dancer…I’ve been wanting to get more ssc items that I use to have and stuff I never had for my lil one as the new ssc is just bleh!
July 10th, 2008 at 8:59 pm
But does she still smell like strawberries??
Casey is a cute doll.
Yay, I was in your neck of the woods in Clearwater and we went to Clearwater beach (the north part, it was nice). We also went to Caladesi island but there was too much seaweed there for my taste

I LOVE the fact that you collect dolls. I love reading about people who collect things, I think it’s great, and it’s always fascinating.
Do you have a big collection dolls already? If so, you should def. take a photo of that. I’d love to see it
